Code of Safety

Canoe Kayak Canada (CKC) and Canoe Kayak BC (CKBC) are committed to creating a safe and enjoyable paddling environment for all. Effective April 1, 2025, the CKC updated Code of Safety reflects the latest best practices and emphasizes shared responsibility for safe participation in all paddling disciplines. This code outlines minimum standards for all events and programs, ensuring a consistent approach to risk management and safety across the country. The updated code builds upon previous versions, consolidating key elements and clarifying expectations for athletes, coaches, instructors, and event organizers. This ensures everyone involved in paddling activities has a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities in promoting a safe and positive paddling experience.

This new Code of Safety emphasizes personal responsibility and risk awareness. It stresses the importance of individual skill assessment, proper equipment use, and adherence to environmental guidelines. These guidelines address a range of situations, from dealing with lightning and high winds to navigating cold water conditions and extreme heat. Participants are responsible for understanding and mitigating these risks, making informed decisions based on their abilities and the prevailing conditions. The document also clearly lays out the specific roles and responsibilities of coaches, instructors, and leaders in ensuring the safety of all participants in their charge. This includes pre-activity risk assessments, adequate training and certification, and the implementation of effective emergency action plans.

The updated Code of Safety underscores the importance of compliance with Transport Canada's Small Vessel Regulations (SVR). This applies to all paddling activities, encompassing safety equipment, and operational guidelines. Members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the current regulations as they will be expected to follow those rules. Finally, the revised code details the procedures for reporting accidents and incidents. Detailed reporting ensures ongoing improvements to safety standards and fosters a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
